Effects of cropping system and tillage on infiltration characteristics of medium black soil of Konkan [India]

The infiltration characteristics of noncalcareous medium black Soil of Konkan region as influenced by cropping system and tillage were studied. The cumulative infiltration (C1) and infiltration rate (IR) under double cropped soil was higher by 25.74 and 33.7%, respectively as compared to monocropped soil (Rice soil). The tillage enhanced the C1 and IR by 28.63 and 95.7%, respectively as compared to untilled soil, however the effect of tillage in enhancing the infiltration rate was modified due to variable cropping system. Almost steady infiltration rate of medium black soil at 180 minutes varied from 1.4 to 2.38 cm/hr under variable cropping system and tillage, therefore the soils could be categorized in good to medium class of soil irrigability
