Oil content and its quality in seeds of wild and cultivated species of Abelmoschus

The oil content and its quality were assessed in the seeds of 9 cultivated varieties of Abelmoschus esculentus (Linn.), Moench, 3 varieties of A. moschatus (Linn.) Medic., 2 of A. manihot (Linn.) Medic., 1 of A. manihot (Linn.) Medic. subsp. manihot Waalkes, 2 unidentified species of Abelmoschus from Africa and 3 interspecific hybrids. On whole-seed basis, the oil content ranged from 11.8 to 17.3% in A. esculentus and 15.3 to 16.8% in A. tetraphyllus. The hybrids did not differ much from the female parents. The iodine value ranged from 78.6 to 126.7 in the 20 collections. The fatty acids consisted mainly of palmitic, oleic and linoleic acids
