To establish optimum levels of soil improvement for maximum yield, a series of investigation based on soil chemical characteristics was conducted in the farmers' fields received drastic high yielding prizes and their respective vicinity (common productive) fields in 1983. Soil chemical properties were higher in high yielding fields than in the vicinity fields, and then the gulfs between both groups of fields were remarkable in available phosphorus and silica contents. Optimum levels of soil improvement for maximum yield were set up as follows pH, 6.0-6.5; av. Phosphorus 183 ppm; ex. potassium, 0.40 m.3/100g; ex. calcium, 7.5 m.3/100g; av. silica, 180 ppm, and clay content, 18 %
