A new rice variety "Gwangmyeongbyeo" was developed from a cross of Nagdongbyeo/// Pebihun/Kanto 98//Kanto 100 at the Yeongnam Crops Experiment Station, Rural Development Administration in 1984. Its heading date was about 7 days earlier than that of Nagdongbyeo in ordinary culture. Gwangmyeongbyeo was resistant to stripe virus, dwarf and black streaked dwarf virus diseases, but susceptible to blast, bacterial leaf blight, sheath blight and most of insect pests. It has short grains with low amylose content and good eating quality, and its grain appearance was clear. The yield potential of Gwangmyeongbyeo was about 5 times higher than that of Nagdongbyeo under the normal fertilizer level. It can be adaptable for the single or double cropping area of Yeongnam region in Korea
