Effects of corn (Zea mays L.) and legume (Vigna radiata (L.)) Wilczek, Arachis hypogaea L. intercrops on crop productivity and soil erosion in hilly land

During the wet season, mungbean had growth and low pod setting. Peanut was viny, had low pod formation and lower yield than the dry season planting (first cropping). Productivity per unit area of intercropping was generally higher than the monoculture check. Corn intercropped with mungbean in 2:2 row planting pattern gave the highest LER of 1.62 during the first cropping followed by 1:1 corn + mungbean and 1:1 corn + peanut with LER of 1.41 and 1.29, respectively. In the second cropping, no significant differences in LER among the cropping patterns was observed. Soil loss from corn intercropped with mungbean or peanut at 1:1 row planting pattern was lower than that of the 2:2 row planting pattern and the monocrops. The 1:1 corn + peanut planting pattern minimized soil erosion better than 1:1 corn + mungbean
