The potential use of ampalaya (Momordica charantia Linn.), malunggay (Moringa oleifera Lam.), and kolasiman (Portulaca oleracea Linn.) extracts in the prevention of piglet anemia

Micu, E.D. Jr.
The effect of orally administering extracts containing 100 mg Fe each of ampalaya (Momordica charantia), malunggay (Moringa oleifera), and kolasiman (Portulaca oleracea) to prevent piglet anemia was tested on 20 day-old piglets using a single factor experiment in CRD. Parameters taken at weekly intervals for 25 days were weight gain and blood characteristics such as haemoglobin content, total red blood cell count, packed cell volume and mean corpuscular values (MCV, MCH, MCHC). Based on these parameters, piglets given ampalaya and malunggay extracts performed comparably with piglets injected with commercial iron preparation. Parameters observed in piglets given kolasiman were comparable to piglets which were not given any iron preparation. Thus, the use of ampalaya and malunggay extracts to prevent piglet anemia is worth considering
