Histological observations on induced genetic male sterile mutants in rice (Oryza sativa L.)
1985
Lu, Y.G. | Quan, Z.G.
Representative lines of four genetic male sterile (GMS) types in rice, viz., stainable pollen abortion, partial pollen abortion, and no pollen, and their original cultivar M-101 were investigated histologically by the method of plastic thin sectioning. Observations on tapetal behavior, pollen development, and stamen conducting tissue showed that the histology of the four types was essentially normal. Even if there was some abnormality present, it occurred after abnormality of the microspores appeared and thus was probably not the cause but rather the consequence of pollen abortion. The distinction of genetic behaviour, cytology, and histology between GMS and the cytoplasmic male sterile types in rice is also discussed
