Wheat research efforts in the Abapo-Izozog region of Bolivia

Bolivia produces less than 20% of its wheat needs and 90% of its production is grown in the traditional wheat-growing areas, located mainly in narrow mountain valleys. Yield is less than 1 t/ha. To increase wheat production the country will have to cultivate wheat in nontraditional areas, now considered as marginal for wheat, that can be divided into two regions: Chaco and Northern Santa Cruz (the tropical and subtropical lowlands in the east). Irrigation is projected for the Chaco and, with available technology, average yield of 2 t/ha is expected; in northern Santa Cruz a gradual increase in wheat area is planned. Wheat would be grown as a winter crop and where yield of 1 to 2 t/ha is expected. Therefore, research on wheat for these areas is of great importance. Wheat research conducted at the Coronel A. Gomez Experiment Station, in the Chaco region, includes breeding for rust resistance, plant type, earliness, lodging, shattering, grain quality, drought tolerance, etc.; programs on soil management and improvement, water efficiency utilization, and crop management are being also carried out at this station
