Lesotho may be divided into three main agroecological regions, the lowlands, the foothills, and the Maloti mountain range. The maize research program is carrying out several experiments to look for high-yielding varieties, using material from CIMMYT and South Africa. Research on chemical control of insect pests (mainly cutworm and stalk borer) and research on agronomic practices are also conducted under this program. Half-sib recombination and hybridization have been used as genetic improvement methods
