Post harvest losses in Barbados
1981
Jones, J.E. (Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Consumer Affairs (Barbados))
Postharvest losses in perishable commodities are very high due largely to pests and diseases, poor intrinsic storage characteristics of the commodities and inadequate storage facilities in farms or marketing institutions. The situation with respect to onions is treated in greater depth. The two most common varieties Granex and Golden, imported F1 hybrids, have fairly short shelf-lives and are susceptible to Erwinia carotovora and Aspergillus niger. Proposed improvements of storage and holding facilities by the major marketing institutions offer some solutions. Research into postharvest physiology of commodities and a good breeding programme on onion cultivars for Barbados are seen as priorities
