Twenty-one sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) seedlings with the tendency to climb were selected from 3000 seedlings. Polycrossing among twiners increased the frequency of climbers from 0.7 % to 33, 56 and 48 % in successive populations. Incidence of virus symptoms increased with twining selections, as did wilting of seedlings. The clone was less vigorous than the seedling generation. Twiners have modified foliage i.e. entire leaves, long internodes and thin stems
