Introduction of clean Dioscorea alata planting material into small farm systems of Dominica

Anthracnose resistant (Bilep and SEA 189) and virus tested (White Lisbon) Dioscorea alata cultivars were introduced into Dominica in 1982-1984. In evaluation at La Plaine Agricultural Station, yields of White Lisbon in 1982 (2.8-4.8 kg/plant) compared favourably with small farms (1.8-2.7 kg/plant). High yields with pen manure suggest further yield improvements by augmenting plant nutrition. Anthracnose was present at increased levels with later generations which may have been induced by the virus-testing process. Anthracnose damage in Bilep did not increase or have an adverse effect on yield
