Effects of cultivar and seed size on growth and yield of ginger (Zingiber officinale Rescoe)

Three seed sizes (5 cm, 7 cm, 9 cm) of two local cultivars of ginger (Zingiber officinale) were studied for their effect on growth and subsequent yield. The pale yellow cultivar performed better than the red cultivar as reflected in higher germination percentage and rate, and yield per hectare. The largest seed size had the highest number of seeds germinating followed by the 7 cm and 5 cm seeds respectively. Seed size did not have any effect on germination rate. The largest seed size produced the greatest number of shoots and the highest yield per hectare whilst the smallest seed size produced the lowest shoots and yield
