The possibility of using an alley between alfalfa plots as a substitute for borders was explored. The effect of the alley between plots on the yield of border and center rows as well as on the yield of the whole plot was studied in a split-plot experiment with main-plot treatments the alley widths of 30, 60, 90 and 120 cm and sub-plot treatments the varieties Talent and Hypates. The yield of the center rows was not affected by the width of the alley. The yield of the border rows and of the whole plot increased linearly with alley width. The use of an alley wider than 120 cm besides its other disadvantages, may lead to a differential response of the varieties tested to the alley space and to a reduction of accuracy. Therefore, on the basis of these results, it is recommended to use an alley about 60 cm wide, only when the competitive0801 ability of the entries tested is expected to be the same, particularly in preliminary experiments where less accuracy is toler
