Health disorders in Zebu and Exotic x Zebu crosses

Halfbreds and 3/4ths with Holstein/Jersey heredity were compared with Zebu and Brown Swiss crosses for the incidence of a number of pre and post-calving disorders. In general, Holstein/Jersey crosses had lower incidence (%) of gastro-intestinal disorders mastitis pulmonary troubles pox, FMD, ephemeral fever and eye troubles as compared to Brown Swiss crosses and Zebu. The 3/4th Holstein/Jersey heredity, which was almost free from many disorders had the highest incidence of gastro-intestinal disorders. This was only 16.9% in the Holstein/Jersey sired halfbreds. Sahiwal seemed to be better among the Zebu. In the light of the results obtained, a proposal for the evolution of a synthetic of Holstein, Jersey and Sahiwal is mooted
