Some measurements of temperature and salinity on a portion of the South China Sea

Twenty one oceanographic observation stations were set up in a portion of the South China Sea between 8-14 May, 1985. The study area covered 8147 km2 and was located about 72-153 km from the Terengganu (Peninsular Malaysia) coastline. Parameters of temperature, salinity and depth were observed. Data collected revealed that the study area was relatively shallow ca. 56-77 m. The average surface water temperature was 32.5 C and it decreased with depth with an average deeper water temperature ( 50 m) of 27.7 C. The temperature of the surface and the deeper water ranged between 28 to 32 C and 25.2 to 28.8 C respectively. The general trend of salinity profiles suggested that salinity tended to increase with depth. The average value of0866surface salinity was 32.6 ppt. and ranged between 31.60 to 33.07 ppt. The range of the deeper water salinity value ( 50 m) was 33.2 to 34.6 ppt. while the average was 33.4 ppt. It appeared that there was no significant difference in temperature and salinity between all stations and throughout the water column.
