Nutrient dynamics following shifting cultivation in Long Sungai Barang, East Kalimantan Indonesia
1987
Soedjito, H. (Herbarium Bogoriense, Bogor (Indonesia))
Long Sungai Barang is highly variable in soil properties. These soil properties are influenced by topography and slope, type of vegetation, as well as number of times the area is previously cultivated. Organic matter, nitrogen (N), sodium (Na), and calcium (Ca) were the principal variable components. In general, soil under primary forest has smaller concentrations of most elements compared to soil under successional vegetation. Soil nutrients accumulated during secondary development and decreased in the mature forests. This study concluded that successional vegetation played an important role in restoring soil fertility and shifting cultivation is not damaging to the primary forest in the1878ar
