Predicting infitration rates and determining hydrologic grouping of soils near Samaru, Kaduna State, Nigeria

Infiltration rates of six different soil types under different land use practices were determined by means of double-ring infiltrameters. Using the final rates, the soils were grouped into four infiltration groups. The ranges of infiltration rates, one range for each group, were 0-10, 10-25, 25-45 and greater than 45 mm/hr. Soil texture, land use, bulk density and profile descriptions were used to characterize the groups. Curve fitting was carried out on Philip's, Horton's and Kostiakov's infiltration models. Horton's model showed consistent deviation during the first 40 minutes of the test but it characterized the later part approximately. Philip's and Kostiakov's models characterized the tests accurately, but the former deviated consistently during the last part of the tests, particularly for swelling soils. Kostiakov's model showed better accuracy under all conditions and is recommended for the soils tested and other similar soils
