The taxonomy of the genus Lens Miller and the main different characters in the five species in the genus Lens Miller namely Lens montbretii, L. ervoides, L. nigricans, L. orientalis, and L. culinaris; the position of L. orientalis and L. nigricans; taxonomy of the cultivated lentil; distribution of cultivated lentils and archeological remains of lentils; origin, domestication and evolution of cultivated lentils; the spreading of lentil culture; evolution of the cultivated forms; and the center of origin of genus Lens are discussed
