Influence of spacing on the growth and yield of four tomato varieties [in Bangladesh]

Four varieties of tomato were studied at four different spacings. Closer spacing gave lower yield per plant but higher yield per hectare. With the increase of spacing yield per plant increased but yield per hectare decreased. With an increase of spacing from 60 cm x 40 cm to 75 cm x 60 cm. yield per plant increased from 1.33 kg to 1.95 kg but yield per hectare reduced from 51.53 t to 43.28 t. The variety Bikash was found to be the highest yielder (55.61 t/ha) and showed 57.89% higher yield than the lowest yielder Roma V.F. (23.22 t/ha). All the varieties gave the highest yield per hectare at the closest spacing.
