Since 1973, a disease characterizing muscular dystrophy and myoglobinuria has occurred in hundreds of horses around Genhe area, Neimenggu. It caused considerable economic losses in animal husbandry. According to its epizootiological, clinical, pathological findings and good response to selenium (Se) treatment, Se-deficiency was suspected. Samples of soil, feedstuff and hair, blood and tissues of horses in ill treating areas were collected for determination of Se status. The Se levels of those samples were significantly lower than normal levels. Our practice showed that Se is an effective agent either for prevention or treatment of this disease.
