Analysis of genetic advance, genetic correlation and path coefficient for yield characters in wheat

From a 3 x 4 incomplete diallel cross, the genetic coefficient of variance (GCV), genetic correlation coefficient, genetic advance (deltaG'), and path coefficient were analyzed in hybrid F2 of wheat. 1. Number of grains per plant and grain weight per plant showed the highest GCV (24.35 - 28.09%), followed by grain weight per ear, grains per ear and grains per main-ear (10.02 - 16.49%); the lowest GCV were seen in ears per plant, 1000-grain weight, plant height, and length of main-ear (5.16 - 8.83%). The deltaG' for these traits showed a similar trend. 2. Genetic correlation coefficients (r1) were higher than phenotypic and environmental r2 in most traits, but the environmental r2 between ears per plant and other traits were higher than the other two. As length of main - ear and grain weight per ear which have high heritability were correlated with grain-weight per plant, they can be used as the index in selection for yield per plant. 3. According to the results of path coefficient analysis, to improve yield per plant and ears per plant was more important than grains per ear and 1000-grain weight in medium and tall straw types, and grains per plant and 1000-grain weight were more important in dwarf types.
