Effect of staking and trellising on yield of Neri, Citrullus lanatus var. neri (Thunb) and Egusi, Cucumberopsis edulis
1983
Gyasi, K.B.
The effects of staking on yield of Neri (Citrullus lanatus) and Egusi (Cucumeropsis edulis) were studied. Mean fruit weight showed significant difference at the 5% confidence level; larger and heavier fruits were observed with no staking than single staked and trellised plants. Unstaked plants produced the lowest number of fruits. Plants showed apical dominance in their vegetative growth and staking led to retardation or inhibition of apical growth. Staking led to death of apical meristems, profuse branching which increased mutual shading of sunlight and stress on the plants, the stress being caused by hanging fruits
