Variability of nodulation in cultivars of bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea (L) Thouars)
1988
Agyei-Dwarko, D.
15 cultivars of bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea) were evaluated in sterile sand culture for high nodulating ability in association with a standard rhizobium strain (TAL 169) using a completely randomized design. Large differences in extent of nodulation, petiole length, number of leaves, dry weight of shoot, dry weight of nodules, percentage and total nitrogen were established between the cultivars. Total shoot nitrogen content and shoot dry weight were more reliable as indicators of nitrogen fixation. The high degree of variation indicates that selection for abundant and effective nodulation in many populations of Vigna subterranea is possible, and genetical work aimed at improving current cultivars must include screening for high nodulating ability for each generation
