Greenhouse studies to determine the inherent fertility of some soils of Guyana

The effects of N, P and K on the following 10 soils are summarized: Tiwiwid fine sand, Tabela sand, Kasarama loamy sand, Ebini sandy loam, De Velde silt loam, Brickery clay, Wauna sandy loam, Hosororo clay, Arakaka clay loam, Kaituma silt loam. Of the nutrients tested phosphorus was by far the most important in increasing yields, as there are relatively low levels of available p. Two soils responded to N application indicating the high native nitrogen status. Three soils responded to K application. It is suggested that those that failed to respond to potassium may have had fixed -K which was released on the removal of the readily available -K. The results of the effect of applied N, P and K on tissue composition for Tiwiwid fine sand, Ebini sandy loam and De Velde silt loam are presented. Available -P, obtained by 8 different chemical extraction methods correlated with percentage yields from pot experiments. Correlation coefficients between laboratory estimates of available -P and percentage yield of (oven-dry) maize tops are presented.
