Root efficiency and distribution of barley in irrigated and nonirrigated field plots

Root distribution and efficiency were investigated under irrigated and nonirrigated conditions. Barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Numar) was planted in a deep alluvial soil (Typic Torrifluvent). Soil water content was measured by neutron probe to calculate depletion rates. Root samples were taken at five time intervals during the season and separated from soil particles using the flotation method. Root length density and water depletion rates were similar in the irrigated and nonirrigated plots during the first 60 days and greatly varied with time due to the variation in hydraulic properties of the soil and root activities. Depletion rates from 60 to 120 cm depth in nonirrigated treatment were significantly higher than irrigated treatment during March and April of 1983 season
