Response of ten lentil genotypes to simulate drought conditions [different water levels; randomized complete block design; correlation of the laboratory germination test with the field test-measuring drought tolerance at the seeding stage: moisture stress level; Jordan]

Ten genotypes were tested under five different water levels and were replicated four times in randomized block design. The same genotypes were tested for their yield stability under different environments, using the same design. A laboratory test using D-mannitol, to stimulate drought conditions, was conducted for measuring drought tolerance at the seeding stage. Results indicated that all 10 genotypes were affected by moisture stress level: among them 76TA66088, Winter lik-51 and UJL 405 showed the least grain yield reduction at the increase of the moisture stress level - from W4 to W0 - indicating the ability of these genotypes to resist drought, over other testet genotypes. Winter like-51, UJL 289, and 78S-26013 had the greatest yield response to applied water (b=7.964, 7.532 and 7.367), 1984/85 season, whereas UJL 405, ILL 4401 and Winter lik-51 had the greatest yield response for 1985/86 to applied water: (b=4.758, 4.492 and 4.449). UJL 405 was widely adapted, having the highest mean grain yield 567 kg/ha and regression coefficient relatively near to unity b1, which indicated that it possessed components stable in response to environments, such as number of pod per plant and number of seed per pod, therefore, they should be involved in a breeding programme with selection exercised for responsiveness in early segregating generations. The laboratory part results revealed that increasing moisture tension caused reduction in speed and percentage of germination, root length and growth, shoot length and fresh weight. The experiments indicated that Winter lik-51 was the most tolerant to D-mannitol induced osmotic stress and superior in its grain yield and drought tolerance over the other genotypes
