The relation between the damage due to brown planthoppers (Nilaparvata lugens S.) and topography

The mechanisms of occurrence of the brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stal), in the different areas are investigated through the relationship between BPH damage and topography. The high percent damage in forecasting paddy fields were observed on the islands and peninsula of southern Korea, and these areas had large BPH immigration. There was a strong positive correlation (r**2= 0.821) ** between percent damage in forecasting paddy fields and number of immigrant BPH caught in light traps. The percentage of paddy field total area, elevation of mountains in the south-western direction, and distance from light traps to the uplands or mountains in the south western direction were corresponded with percentage of paddy field damage due to BPH. Their correlation coefficient were r= -0.676** r= 0.789**, and r**2= 0.545*, respectively. We suspect topographical variation causes immigrant BPH to land at a high density in a low percentage of paddy fields, and land at a low density in a high percentage of paddy fields such as Jeonbuk province
