A study to determine the best time of topping for promising flue-cured tobacco cultivars that are potential for high flavored tobacco was conducted. The study was laid out in split-plot design with four replications using topping times of 60% and 80% of the potential leaves, button stage and untopped as main plot; and using cultivars PT-1, Buyer's Choice, Nordel, NC-82, Delgold, NC 95, Reams 266, NC 2326, Carolina, NCBY, CV279 and Coker 254 (check cultivar) as subplot. Cultivars performed differently with topping time. Topping at 80% of the potential leaves obtained similar yield and crop value index with those topped at button stage using Coker 254, Reams 266, NCBY, Delgold, NC 95, Carolina, NC 82, and NC 2326. Topping at 60% of the potential leaves of cultivars PT-1, Buyer's Choice, NC 82, Delgold and NC 2326 showed an increase in nicotine content. Moreover, Coker 254, Nardel, Delgold, NC 95, Reams 266, Carolina, NCBY and CV 279 topped at the same time and PT-1, Buyer's Choice, NC 2326, and CV 279 topped at 80% of their potential leaves met the nicotine reducing sugar ratio of 8 to 12 prescribed for local consumption.
