Piloting lowland potato technology in Ilocos Norte farmers' fields [Philippines]

Significant results of previous lowland potato researches were piloted in ten farmers' field of Batac, Ilocos Norte and Laoag City [Philippines] from November 1985 to March 1986. Technologies verified included methods of planting, time of mulching, intercropping and relay-cropping with corn and dates of planting. Results showed that mulched potatoes at planting generally gave higher yields than those mulched at hill-up or unmulched. Marketable and total yields from mulched plots in all dates of planting were comparable. Higher reduction of yields was observed in plots mulched at hill-up and unmulched compared to those mulched at planting in November 30 and December 15 planting. Double-row potatoes relayed to corn gave higher combined net return compared to single row and potatoes alone. Intercropping and strip cropping corn to potato was not viable. Dense corn population caused severe yield reduction in potato which was not compensated by the yield of the corn intercrop. All the 10 farmers succeeded with the highest actual and potential yields of 31.5 and 34.1 tons/ha. respectively. Their return on investment (ROI) ranged from 75% to 405%. Projected net income per hectare ranged from P13,788.00 to P212,530.00 at a minimum selling price of P6-9/kg of tubers. The generated technology can now be recommended in the meantime for the next cropping system.
