Feeding value of lye-treated rice straw with or without urea-molasses supplementation for yearlings cattle and carabaos

Lye solution was extracted from rice straw ash previously soaked in tap water (1 kg ash/5 liter water) overnight and analyzed for mineral concentration. This was carried out to assess the use of rice straw ash as source of lye solution to treat rice straw. Treatment periods were 0, 2, 4 and 8 weeks. The in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of rice straw was improved by treating it with lye solution (6.4%) at 1 liter solution/kg DM and its effect was comparable to 2% NaOH solution when used at the same rate for one week. Metabolism trials were conducted using four yearling carabaos and five yearling upgrade cattle to determine the effects of lye treatment on voluntary intake and in vivo digestibility of rice straw. The test diets utilized were untreated rice straw (RS), rice straw treated with 2% NaOH (RSN) and with lye solution (RSL), with (UM) or without urea and molasses supplementation. Dry matter consumption (% of BW) of diets RSL and RSL + UM was significantly higher than that of RS, RS + UM, RSN and RSN + UM. Crude fiber (CF) decreased when rice straw was either urea-molasses supplemented or NaOH/lye-treated. The total digestible nutrient (TDN) was improved from 32.2% (RS) to 39.3% (RS + UM).
