Dose responses of goats fed urea-treated rice straw with varying supplementation rates: intake and digestibility of markers [Philippines]

In a randomized complete block design, eight mature upgraded Philippine goats were used to evaluate five dietary treatments during five successive periods. The diets were: rice straw ad libitum; urea treated straw ad libitum (UTS); UTS + concentrate (S) at 0.2% liveweight (LW); UTS + S at 0.4 % LW; and UTS + S at 0.8% LW. Digestibility was determined by Chromix oxide-attached marker (COM) and acid-insoluble-ash marker (AIA) methods. Urea treatment increased crude protein (CP) content of straw from 5.9% to 8.5% and in vitro digestibility (P.01) from 43.9% to 50.0%. Dry matter (DM) intake increased (P.05) with urea treatment and further increased (P.05) with concentrate supplementation to 801 g/d. Digestibility of rice straw as determined by markers increased (P.05) with urea treatment (36.8-39.3% vs 41.1-43.6%) and further increased (P.05) with 0.4% LW concentrate supplementation. Consistently higher digestibility values were obtained with COM and AIA. Higher recovery rates were also found with COM than AIA (93.6% vs 88.4%). Nitrogen balance was negative with untreated straw, became positive with UTS, then further increased (P.05) with concentrate supplementation. Urea treatment doubled (P.05) crude protein and digestible energy intakes which were further increased (P.05) with increasing levels of supplementation.
