Prasad, C. | Kulshrestha, J.P. | Sinha, V.R.P.
This paper describes (1) the basic problems and potential of rice production, especially of rainfed lowland rice; (2) the genesis and conceptual framework of operational research projects (ORPs); (3) ORP as an integral part of the first line extension system of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research [New Delhi, India]; (4) the aims and objectives of ORP's; (5) the achievements of ORP's; (6) the constraints to change; and (7) the future extension strategy. The limited number of ORPs on rainfed lowland rice is indicative of the need for starting more ORPs and extension efforts to accelerate rice production, particularly in the eastern states of Bihar, West Bengal, and Orissa and the eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh and the Madhya Pradesh.
