After a frosty winter of 1986-87 the most dangerous pathogen of the bark and wood of fruit trees, including apple trees, became the fungus Chondrostereum purpureum, causing silver leaf disease. The most typical symptom is that leaves turn silvery or become lead-coloured. In order to prevent this disease it is necessary to destroy sources of infection and to protect wounds in the apple-tree crown against the infection due to the application of fungicides
