Actuality and perspectives of research in the improvement of nutritive value of winter barley and two-rowed barley

In the first, the paper presents a synthesis of the present knowledge regarding: - characteristics of the main protein components in barley grains; - modalities and mechanism for improving the lysine content in barley grain proteins; - mutant genotypes for the content and quality of proteins in barley and their classification in relation with the main types of biochemical modifications caused by mutations; -methods of improving the nutritive value by utilization of the lys gene sources; - methods for determination and evaluation of the lysine content - results obtained about the protein quality improving. The second part of the paper presents some preliminary results obtained in the barley breeding programme of the Research Institute of Cereals and Industrial Crops-Fundulea
