The extension component of the Saint Lucia Banana Growers' Association: an evaluation study

The St. Lucia Banana Growers' Association presently finances the salaries of 21 front-line fruit quality extension officers. The broad objective of this study was to determine the effect of banana extension work on farmers' knowledge, skills, interest, attitudes and practices with respect to banana production and marketing. Banana extension was considered as a function of both the activities of the extension component and the impact of these activities on the farmers. The findings suggest that the banana extension component contributes significantly to the farmers' adoption of the recommended field practices. The farmers are knowledgeable about the improved practices and have the basic skills to implement them. Banana production is important to them and is a major source of income. A positive attitude exists towards cultivating the cro p. Banana extension and other complementary information sources are a good support for the farmers and their families. Improvements suggested are directed to the extension officers, the St. Lucia Banana Growers' Association and the Government and relate to better programme plans and delivery, the encouragement of extension activities by providing facilities and incentives to front-line officers, and increased farmers' involvement in the affairs of the association
