Mineral composition of Indonesian ruminant forages

The concentrations of essential dietary mineral nutrients (N, Ca, P, S, Mg, Na, Cu, Zn, Se, Mo, Co, Mn, K, and Fe) were determined in ruminant forages from selected areas in 5 provinces in Indonesia, East and West Java, South Sulawesi, North Sumatra and East Nura Tenggara. The concentration of nitrogen and minerals in grasses (22 genera), legumes (22 genera), herbs/weeds (7 genera), non-leguminous tree leaves (9 genera) and 14 crop residues. Mineral concentrations were assessed in relation to recommended dietary requirements for cattle. Inadequate concentrations of Na, Cu and P occurred in all 5 provinces studied, while deficient levels of Co, Zn and Se occurred with a frequency exceeding 20 % of the samples. Deficiencies of the minerals Ca, Mg, Mo, Mn, K and Fe would not be expected. The interaction of Cu and Fe should be investigated
