The reduction of soil compaction by sugar cane by-products used as soil amendments

In laboratory and field experiments on clay and silty clay loam soils in Trinidad, amendments of bagasse and filter press mud at 0, 50 or 100 t/ha alone or in combination improved the physical properties of the soils, viz. bulk density, penetration resistance, shear strength, macro-porosity and water retention, particularly at the higher levels of applications combined. Bagasse was more effective than filter mud, but improved cane and sugar yield was associated with filter press mud which is attributed to improved soil fertility due to P-content of mud
