Effect of nutrition level on live weight growth and development of body components in Western Sudan Baggara cattle

32 weaned Western Sudan Baggara bull calves (45-85 weeks old and weighing 62.8 +- 10.5 kg) were divided into 2 similar groups based on their age and live weight and assigned randomly to treatment A or B. Animals of treatment A were offered feed at the rate of 3.5 kg/100 kg live weight and those on treatment B received 65 % of this. The 4 heaviest animals in each treatment were slaughtered after 18 weeks in feedlot, the 4 second heaviest animals at the beginning of the trial, the third heaviest 4 after 11 weeks in feedlot and the 4 lightest after 32 weeks in feedlot. Feedlot performance and carcass data were collected and subjected to variance and covariance analyses. The animals of treatment A made faster weight gains and were heavier at the end of the feeding period than those which received treatment B but the patters of development of body components were similar for both treatments. Animals of treatment A tended to yield heavier carcasses and deposited more mesenteric fat than animals from treatment B. Carcass yield in Western Sudan Baggara cattle compared favourably with Hereford x Friesian and Hereford steers
