Tesovic, Z. (Institut za vocarstvo, Cacak (Yugoslavia))
Mutual crossing of 101 parent apple varieties has been performed by the method of purposeful hybridization in the 1959-1986 period and 367 different hybrid populations with the total of 70,555 seedlings have been obtained. Among them 143 promise hybrids have been selected by positive selection, 74 of them have been throughly studied, 69 are being investigated and two have been certified as new apple varieties: Cacanska pona and Cadel. Great differences in the combining abilities among the parent varieties have been found to exist. None of the combinations proved to be superior with regard to the inheritance of all positive properties. Creation of a new apple variety by the method of hybridization lasts 20 to 30 years.
