Almost all types of living cells divide resulting in cell proliferation at the graft union but the central pith is the least active. Cell division occurs more or less in organized manner resulting in files of cells in vascular and cortical region. In continuation to these files of cells at the outer ends of explanted internode grafts callus masses are produced. A debris layer at the graft union is formed of cut and damaged cells together with the materials deposited from other cells. This layer quickly disappears in compatible autografts in vitro enabling the union of callus at the graft interface.
