Genetic variability for some quantitative traits in maize

Thirty three collections of maize (Zea mays L.) showed significant differences for grain yield, days to silk, plant height, ear height, ear length, car diameter, kernel rows per ear, number of kernels per row and 1000 kernel weight. The maximum range of variation was observed for 1000-kernel weight followed by grain yield. The genotypic and phenotypic coefficients variation were higher for grain yield, plant height, ear height, number of kernels per row and 1000-kernel weight. The heritability estimate was the highest for days to silk and it was followed by plant height and number of kernels row. The expected genetic advance as percentage of mean was high for grain yield, plant height, ear height, ear length, number of kernels per row and 1000-kernel weight. High genetic advance along with high heritability for plant height and number of kernels per row indicates that selection for these traits would be most effective in improving the present material.
