Variability and correlation in three groups of rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Estimates of variability, heritability, genetic advance and correlations were made in cold tolerant traditional indica, modern indica and japonica rice varieties during boro season. Phenotypic variability was high for plant height, maturity period, panicle number per plant and 1000-grain weight in all groups. Genotypic variability, however was high for plant height and 1000-grain weight in modern and japonica varieties. Heritability along with genetic advance were high for panicle number per plant in traditional indicas; plant height, panicle number per plant, fertile grain per panicle and yield per plant in modern varieties/lines and plant height, fertile grain per panicle and yield per plant in japonica varieties. The yield per plant were highly and positively associated with plant height, maturity period and fertile grain per panicle both in modern and japonica varieties. These associations were negative with panicle number per plant in modern varieties/lines and 1000-grain weight in traditional indica varieties.
