Tillage techniques for dry land wheat: socio-agro-economic impacts on existing farming system [in Bangladesh]

On-farm trials on representative floodplain alluvium soils with three treatments viz., minimum tillage with shallow farrow, reduced and conventional were used on modern wheat cultivar with uniform basal NPK fertilizer nutrients of 60, 20 kg/ha. Maximum grain yield of 2,23 t/ha obtained from minimum tillage treatment differed insignificantly with reduced tillage but significantly with conventional tillage. Highest growth margin was however obtained from reduced tillage followed by minimum and convectional one. In general, marginal and small farmers having no draft power accepted minimum tillage as their first choice since it facilitates early sowing, ensures highest utilization of residual soil moisture and also exploitation of idle farm labourers during lean period of demand. Reduced tillage ranked second in choice to farmers having required draft power while conventional tillage was not at all preferred because of poor return.
