Study on the performance of different fruit and forest species in the barind tract [Bangladesh]

Mortality rate and growth of eight fruit and forest species were studied on a rapidly drying heavy textured soil at Farming Systems Research Site, Saroil, Barind, Rajshahi, Bangladesh in 1987. The mortality rate increased from 25% (in January) to 55% (in June) from starting to ending of the drought period. The highest mortality was found in case of olive (90%) followed by mango (80%) and the lowest mortality was found in tamarind (20%) followed by Sissoo and raintree (30%). The mean heights attained by the three species which had the lowest mortality in ten months were tamarind 54 cm, Shishu 57 cm and Raintree 150 cm.
