Effect of potash on the growth and yield of sugarcane in old Himalayan piedmont plain soils [Bangladesh]

Field experiments were conducted to determine the potash requirements of sugarcane in the old Himalayan piedmont plain soils of Panchagarh, Dinajpur, Bangladesh during the cropping season of 1983-84 and 1984-85. The tests were conducted on sandy loam soil. Potash was applied at the rate of 45, 70, 90, 135 and 180 kg K/ha. Control plots received no potassium. Data on number of millable cane was increased upto 90 kg K/ha application, but the results were insignificant among the treatments. Application of potash fertilizer showed a significant effect on cane and sugar yield. Highest yield of cane and sugar was obtained at 90 kg K/ha application. The increase in cane yield was about 14%-16% higher than the check. Highest net profit was also found with the same treatment in both the year. The K content of third leaves provided a good indication of response to applied K fertilizer and maintained a high level of K concentrations.
