Seed imbibition with zinc as a method of correcting zinc deficiency in rice

The effect of different concentrations of Zn on the Zn absorption characteristics of three rice varieties was tested under both laboratory and greenhouse conditions. Rice seeds were soaked at in 0.2% to 1.0% ZnSO4 solutions for 12 hours. The absorption of Zn by the rice seeds was higher from the solutions of higher Zn concentration. Seed germination percentage was significantly higher with lower level of Zn in the soaking solution. A maximum of about 34 ppm Zn in the shoot of 52 days old BR11 plant was obtained with the 1.0% ZnSO4 treatment as against a shoot Zn concentration of about 22 ppm obtained with the control treatment (distilled water). The optimum concentration of ZnSo4 solution for seed soaking was determined at 0.2% ZnSo4 BR11 and 0.5% for BR4 and BR10 when seed Zn content was increased from 27 mg/kg in the original seed to 170 mg/kg for BR11 and 300 mg/kg for BR4 and BR10 through pre-soaking in ZnSo4 solution.
