Abundance of nitrogen fixing blue green algae in different soils of Bangladesh

The natural abundance of nitrogen fixing blue green algae was estimated during 1984-85 in 16 different soil samples representing 14 general soil types (grey floodplain soil noncalcareous alluvium, acid basin clavs, brown hill soils, black terai soil, noncalcareous brown floodplain soil, noncalcareous dark grey floodplain soil, brown mottled terrace soil, calcareous alluvium, grey terrace soil, deep red brown terrace soil, calcareous brown floodplain, calcareous dark grey floodplain soil and acid sulphate soil). Five of the soils viz. Burichang, Comilla (acid basin clays), Nondula, Sylhet (brown hill soil), Thakurgaon of Dinajpur (black terai soil), South Salna, Gazipur (grey terrace soil) and Noapara, Rajshahi (calcareous brown floodplain soil) showed no algal growth. The population of blue green algae (number per g soil) ranged from 33 to 1700 in air dried soil, 230 to 35000 at field capacity and 1700 to 33000 under waterlogged condition. Overall, algal population increased with the increase in moisture level highest being under waterlogged condition. No positive relationships were found between algal population and soil potassium). A positive correlation between algal population and available phosphorus was found at field capacity.
