Response of onion plants to Alar application. 2.- Effect of Alar on biochemical response of onion bulbs at harvest and during storage [Egypt]

The results indicated no significant effect to Alar treatments on dry matter content of harvested bulbs. The interaction of early spraying with 200 ppm Alar increased significantly non reducing sugars in comparison to other interactions as well as the control. Significant increases in total nitrogen percentage was noticed with spraying by 100, 300 ppm Alar or dual sprays 35 and 90 days after transplanting. The application of 200 ppm Alar increased soluble non protein nitrogen. Highest content of vitamin C was obtained by sprays with 300 ppm or late application especially with 200 ppm Alar. Concerning pungency of bulbs, it decreased with the application of 100, 200 and ppm Alar, respectively. During storage period, further increases in both total and soluble nitrogen content, pungency and total acidity were obtained while vitamin C was approximately stable. Generally, it could be summarized that sprays onion plants with 100 ppm Alar was relatively the most effective treatment which increased the concentration of biochemical components need for human nutrition.
