Effect of plant population, nitrogen rates and harvesting time on grain yield and dry matter distribution in maize kernels [Egypt]
1986
El-Kholany, A.A. (Ministry of Agriculture, Cairo (Egypt). Field Crops Research Inst.) | Abdel-Aziz, M.
The corn double - hybrid 186 (Zea mays L.) was sown at three plant populations (41.6, 55.5 and 83.5 thousand plants/ha), harvested after 90,100 and 110 days from sowing and fertilized by 0, 100,200 and 300 kg N/ ha. Kernel number and weight/plant and grain yield/ ha increased significantly by increasing N rates or delaying harvesting time to 110 days. Increasing plant population decreased kernel number and weight/ plant but increased grain yield/ ha. Harvesting maize after 110 days from sowing gave the highest kernel, pericarp, endosperm and embryo dry weight at a density of 55.5 thousand plants/ ha fertilized with 300 kg N/ ha.
